The Brock Eagles used all three phases of the game to advance to the 3A Division I State Championship with a 35-28 overtime victory over Mount Vernon Thursday night at McKinney ISD Stadium. The Eagles used an explosive offense (372 total yards), opportunistic defense (caused 3 turnovers and a touchdown), and two blocked kicks on special teams to come from behind to win.
Brock Head Football Coach Billy Mathis summed it up best, "I wish everyone in the world could feel it, because there is nothing better in the world than the feeling of going to a state championship game!"
Junior Quarterback Tyler Moody led the Eagles offense with his arm throwing for 201 yards and 3 scores, while rushing for 48 yards. You can say Moody was destined for this moment, as he has been manifesting it since a kid. "I've been dreaming about a game like this since I was 7 years old and it felt so good to drive down on that last drive and get the job done." Moody
Mount Vernon scored the first points of the game with a Braden Bennett to Raif Ramsay 13-yard touchdown pass. Brock would go on to score 21 unanswered points after that. Moody connected with Wideout Elijiah Potts on a 17-yard touchdown pass for the Eagles first points. On the next Tigers possession, Defensive Back Reid Watkins scooped and scored a Mount Vernon fumble to make it 14-7 after the first quarter.
Both teams traded punts and Brock scored right before half on a 2-yard Brett Tutter touchdown run. Brock to a 21-7 lead into halftime.
Mount Vernon came out in the second half on fire scoring 21 unanswered points of their own. The Tigers started the second half off with a Kam Doss interception, that setup a Bennett 1-yard touchdown run to make it 21-14. Then Running Back Makenzie McGill tied the game up with a 2-yard touchdown run.
The Tigers recover the ensuing kickoff to take over in Brock territory. Mount Vernon capitalized off of the onside kick three plays later, as Bennett scores his second rushing touchdown of the game from 22-yards out.
Brock never batted an eyes in the wake of adversity. As their special teams held Mount Vernon from getting off a field goal attempt that would have made it a two score game. Potts, scored his second touchdown of the game on a jet sweep to tie the ball game at 28 with 2:24 left. The Tiger drove down the field and had a chance to win the game, but an unsuccessful snap and hold sent the game into overtime. that would have won them the game in regulation.
Brock scored on 4th and goal with a bit of a trick formation that left the Tigers confused and Minnesota commit Nathan Jones wide open in the end zone to put the Eagles up 35-28.
Mount Vernon couldn't regain the magic they had all second half and on 4th down Brock sophomore Defense Back Carson Finney intercepted the Bennett pass and sealed the victory for Brock. Finney said, "I saw it and I was just going to get it. I trusted my D-Line to get that pressure on the QB and everyone who did their coverage. Just happen to be me right their, it could have been anyone of us."
Brock (15-0) will face Lorena in the 3A Division I State Championship Game next Thursday at 3:00 pm in Cowboy Stadium.
