The Grandview (TX) Zebras made a statement to the rest of the state with a 70-7 victory over rival Maypearl (TX) Friday night. Grandview made playes in all three phases early in the game that set the tone for the rest of the night.
It was very evident that the rivalry is real between both towns. Grandview Junior Quarterback Ryder Hayes understood the assignment, as he led the Zebras offense with 325 yards and 4 touchdowns passing. "We come into this game every year knowing that we don't like each other, so it's fun to come out here and win big against these guys".
Hayes could have had an even bigger night, because he had two touchdown passes to Senior Wideout Kason English called back. English had a big night despite having the two touchdowns called back, as he opened the game with a 51-yard touchdown run and finished the night with 4 catches for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving also.
English made plays on defense and special teams for the Zebras also. "Our offense was clicking on all cylinders. I had to come out and set the tone you know? Big rivalry game, I just had to make sure that they knew they couldn't be on the field with us."
Running Back Casey Cannon led the Zebras in rushing with 84 yards and 2 touchdowns. Other offensive standouts were JJ Castillo, Anthony Berrones, Brandon Click, Carter Collins and Freshman Athlete Jaleal Allen. Allen had a spectacular touchdown catch and standout plays on defense. Keep an eye for Allen the next 4 years as he is special.
Maypearl opened the game with a 57-yard Heath Graf to Cole Rager touchdown pass. Rager had a big interception in the 1st quarter also. The Panthers couldn't get any momentum after the opening quarter though.
Maypearl (1-3) will face Gateway Charter Academy next week and Grandview (4-1) will fface GCA the following week after their bye week this week.
